Reacting to plans for Bath & North East Somerset Council to enter into talks about merging with parts of Somerset County Council, Councillor Joe Rayment said: “The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are both keen to merge with parts of Somerset for the interests of their own parties, but I cannot see any benefit for Bath from these plans. The Liberal Democrats would have better chances of running the Council if we joined up with Wells and Frome, while the Tories want to merge with Mendip to help their chances.

“I think that we should be doing what’s best for Bath. That means not joining up with areas that most people in Bath rarely go to, and it definitely doesn’t mean merging with a cash strapped council like Somerset, so that we can take on their debt.”
