The by election held in Kingsmead ward on 5 July saw Labour’s vote increase more than any other party. Labour’s candidate, Dr Sharon Gillings, finished in a strong second place, with the vote share doubling since 2015.
Reacting to the result, Dr Gillings said: “This result is a game changer for Bath Labour Party and for Bath politics. In just four weeks we have doubled our vote share, beaten the Conservatives into third and mobilised the Labour Party membership.”
“For too long the Liberals and Conservatives have taken Bath residents for granted. We have listened to local people. We have put forward fresh ideas. The extended pedestrianisation of the city centre and regulation of short term lets are both much needed and popular policies. Bath residents deserve a new deal.”
“Defeating the Conservatives lays to rest the myth that Labour supporters in Bath have to vote tactically. The Liberals’ only selling point is that they are not the Conservatives. This result demonstrates that Bath residents can vote for the Labour policies they want and still defeat the Tories.”
