Campaigning

Walcot by-election - 6 April

A by-election has been called for Walcot Ward on Thursday 6 April 2017, with the three main parties and the Greens standing.

The Labour Party candidate is Amber Weston. Amber is 22 years old and has lived in Bath all her life.

The campaign is underway in the ward, and will work alongside campaigning for the Metro Mayor (see below) which we have deliberately scheduled in Walcot early in the Metro Mayor campaign. She has made statements on Clean Air For Walcot and Housing.

Newbridge by-election - 4 May

Donal Hassett, elected as a Tory councillor in Newbridge, was found guilty in February for conspiring to produce cannabis. He has resigned earlier than expected, and a by-election has been called for Newbridge Ward on Thursday 4 May 2017, the same day as the Metro Mayor election.  The candidate selection meeting is on 3 April, see above for details.

Metro Mayor campaign - 4 May

School budget cuts

According to the National Audit Office, schools are facing overall per-pupil cuts of 8% in real terms by 2019-20. This is largely due to a forthcoming new national funding formula and pupil numbers rising by 10.3% in secondary schools, and 3.9% in primary schools by 2019/20. A per school analysis has jointly been made by the teaching unions, showing Bath school budgets will be significantly reduced over the next three years.  You can check the level of cuts for your local schools on this interactive map. The Combe Down Primary School headteacher has written about this, as have the nine secondary headteachers and principals involved in the Bath Education Trust.

Bath MP, Ben Howlett, has called this "fake news".

For Bath secondary schools the teaching unions estimated annual cut per pupil by 2019/20 is:

  • St Mark's: - £933
  • Bath Community Academy: -£855
  • Ralph Allen: - £568
  • Hayesfield: - £511
  • Beechen Cliff: - £366
  • Oldfield: - £364
  • St Gregory's: - £290

This will be a developing campaigning area.

Air Quality Review

B&NES council is currently updating its 6 year old Air Quality Action Plan, which should soon go out to consultation.

As a gentle introduction, you may want to watch BBC's Inside Out West item about Bath's air quality of two weeks ago: on iPlayer - first 10 minutes. They managed to come up with a claim "Air pollution in Bath can be as bad as Beijing'"! Air quality is one of our Walcot candidate Amber Weston's campaign themes.
