Black Lives Matter
Thank you to our Bath Labour Party members who couldn’t attend the Black Lives Matter protest in Bath because they were isolating, but sent photos in to show their solidarity. We have created this fantastic collage with them.
Murder of George Floyd
By: Phil de Souza, Bame Officer, Bath Labour Party
The shocking murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis policeman has led to outpourings of anger across the USA and internationally.
Why should the murder of a Black man in the US concern us in the UK?
Because there are parallels over here, despite the UK specific issues. Black people here are 40 times more likely to be stopped and searched. Black men, in particular, are targeted by the police and feel persecuted.
The prison population has disproportionate numbers of Black and Asian young people. There have been many incidents of heavy handedness by police forces, many are not recorded, increasing anger that these are not isolated incidents.
Poverty and social exclusion is widespread in BAME communities. These are issues that we must also confront. Now is the time to show solidarity with the Black American experience and highlight the targeting of Black people in this country.
We need to look at different ways to express these concerns. As CLP BAME Officer, I am considering feasible options for Bath Labour. Please share your ideas and or suggestions in confidence.
